Piezoelectric Switch
A Piezo switch is a solid-state switching technology based on the functional principle of the piezoelectric crystal that utilizes the direct piezoelectric effect. Piezo switches uses ingenious phenomenon, which releases voltage through pressure.
In simple terms, Piezo effect occurs when certain material (crystal, some ceramic) emit a voltage when mechanically pressed. The voltage emitted is proportional to the change in the force applied. Conversely when a voltage is applied to a Piezo material, the material will move from static state.
Piezo switch elements typically have a piezoelectric Component physically mounted on the back of a thin base surface which can be made up of SS plate which is chemically etched, the size of switch is based on desired pressure requirements of the customer.
When we can apply respective pressure on piezoelectric element there is a small displacement and subsequent strain on the dielectric material. This strain causes a build-up of an electric field that causes a voltage to be induced due to a charge transfer. The voltage generated is converted by the electronic connection into a polarity-neutral, electronic switch contact.
The main advantages of the Piezo switch are that there are no moving parts resulting in extending the life cycle per key. The flat actuation surface is completely sealed, preventing the intrusion of liquids or other contaminants. This Piezo switches offers an extremely long life. With completely sealed design and corrosion resistant top surface, it protects the electrical switch even from the toughest environment including oil and gas exploration, oceanographic application and food processing plants.
